Alright, Masters week is upon us. The azaleas are probably already popping, and Augusta National is about to get its annual dose of drama. This year, though, feels a little different. Tiger’s not really in the mix, Phil’s… well, Phil’s Phil. But there’s still plenty to chew on. We’re talking storylines, who’s got the game right now, and whether the usual suspects can shake off some early-season rust. Let’s get into it.
So, Masters week. Everyone’s got their eyes glued to Augusta. What’s the one thing you’re really watching for this year? Forget the obvious stuff for a second. What’s the narrative that’s got you hooked?
First off, there’s the Scottie Scheffler question. Is this slump he’s been in, this “slump” that’s still better than most guys’ best weeks, actually a thing? Or is it just that early-season funk we see sometimes? If he stumbles at Augusta, a place where he’s absolutely owned it, then yeah, maybe we start ringing those alarm bells. It’s hard to imagine, but you never know.
Then you’ve got Justin Rose. The guy’s in his mid-40s, and he’s still lurking around the top 10 in the world. And he’s been so damn close at Augusta, losing it in playoffs twice. It’s insane. He had a bit of a lull after Torrey Pines, but then he goes and T-13s the Players. Is this the week the Green Jacket finally goes home with him? It feels like it’s been a long time coming.
And what about Brooks Koepka? His major record since that PGA Championship win last year hasn’t exactly been stellar. But he’s been talking about fixing this putting issue that’s bugged him for ages. He was playing some decent golf until that missed cut in Houston. Could this be the major where Brooks re-emerges as the absolute force we know he can be? That’s a storyline worth watching.
With the first major of the year looming, who’s got the momentum? Who’s looking like a threat, and who’s just hoping to make the cut?
I’m buying stock in Ludvig Aberg. Seriously. The kid’s been on fire lately. Three top 10s in his last three starts. And even though he’s only got a little bit of Masters experience, he’s shown he can play well there. I reckon he’s going to be a factor this week. Keep an eye on him.
Tommy Fleetwood is my guy this week. His game just feels like it’s built for Augusta. He’s been in the top 10 in three of his five starts this season. He wasn’t in the mix this past weekend in Texas, but he was right there going into Saturday. This could be his moment.
And I’m feeling Xander Schauffele. After winning two majors in 2024, he got derailed by that rib injury last year and just couldn’t seem to find his rhythm. But he’s been playing some solid golf lately, especially with his irons. I still think Rose might win it, but Xander is definitely going to be in the hunt come Sunday.
Bryson DeChambeau has been cleaning up on the LIV Golf circuit, winning both of his starts heading into the Masters. He’s also finished in the top six at Augusta the last couple of years. Are you more bullish on Bryson than ever? Is he your top pick from the LIV guys?
Look, with Rory and Scottie having a bit of a slow start to their seasons, this Masters feels more open than it has in years. So why not Bryson, right? You can’t ignore how he’s playing. The big question for him will be his iron play. Can he control his distances on those approach shots? That’s going to be the key.
Honestly? Yawn. A LIV victory doesn’t carry the same weight for me. It was one thing when Brooks lost to Rahm a couple of years back, that meant something. But Bryson winning at Augusta? I just don’t see it. He’ll probably contend, sure. But winning? Nah.
I’m with Jack on this one. It’s tough to see it all clicking for Bryson at Augusta. He seems to have figured some things out since those missed cuts in ’22 and ’23. He contended last year even when his iron distances were all over the place. Now he’s talking about “dialing in” his wedges. I think Jon Rahm, not Bryson, is the LIV player who’s actually going to be in the mix this week.
So, the big question: are you backing a combination of Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, or are you going with the field? And more importantly, why?
I’m taking the field. Simple as that. Neither of the top guys has shown enough consistency this year for me to put my money on them against the rest of the field. Does that mean they won’t win? Of course not. But the odds are definitely favoring the rest of the guys out there.
The field for me too. It’s not that I don’t think Scottie and Rory can contend. But I’m not convinced Scheffler is feeling all that comfortable with his driver right now, and that’s a pretty damn important club to have in your bag at Augusta. Rory? I expect a bit more from him at this stage, but neither of them is playing at that world-beating level we’ve seen from them in the past couple of years.
I’m also going with the field. Between Scottie’s iron play not looking like Scottie’s usual iron play, and Rory dealing with that back issue? It just feels more likely that someone outside those top two is going to walk away with the Green Jacket. I’m curious to see how Rory plays now that he’s finally conquered that Augusta beast. He’ll contend, for sure, but repeating is a monumental task. And honestly, I’m still not sure what to make of Scottie’s game right now. Is his iron play ready for Augusta?
Last year, we all agreed Rory McIlroy needed a Masters win the most. Now that he’s got his Green Jacket, who’s next on your list? Who’s the player who really, really needs this win?
Justin Rose. Hands down. He’s had his hands on that Green Jacket twice, and he just couldn’t quite seal the deal. Father Time is starting to catch up, and his chances are dwindling. A Masters win for Rose would probably mean more to him than anyone else in that field. Plus, that swing of his deserves more than just one major on the resume.
Tommy Fleetwood. He was arguably the best player in the world at the end of last season, and he’s still playing lights out in 2026. It’s time for him to get that major championship monkey off his back.
I’m with Zephyr. It’s Justin Rose. The guy has led or co-led at Augusta after the first, second, and third rounds nine times. That’s third all-time, behind only Palmer and Nicklaus. He’s 18 under par in his last 10 Masters starts, which ranks seventh. And five of the six guys ahead of him on that list have won jackets during that period. It’s time for Justin.
Alright, let’s wrap this up with some parting thoughts as we head into the biggest week in golf.
I’ve got a feeling we’re going to see a hole-in-one on No. 16 on Sunday. That traditional funnel pin, it just screams ace.
This is the year our very own Alan Bastable wins the media lottery. Ever since Brooks Koepka asked him if he’d played the course in a press conference, I’ve been dying to see that actually happen.
I second that motion.
Ten years after his collapse on No. 12, I think Jordan Spieth is going to hold the 54-hole lead this year. It’s going to make for another incredibly memorable Sunday at Augusta National.
