Masters Buzz: Who's Hot, Who's Not, and Can Scottie or Rory Deliver?

Alright, it’s Masters week. The azaleas are probably blooming, the cannons are ready to fire, and the whole damn golf world is glued to Augusta. Tiger’s not playing, Phil’s not playing, but there’s still plenty of drama brewing. We’ve got the usual suspects, some guys on fire, and a few question marks hanging in the air like a bad slice. Let’s dive into what’s really going on.

The Storylines That Matter (Besides Winning)

Look, everyone wants to see who hoists the green jacket. But let’s be real, there are other narratives playing out that are just as juicy. What’s got people buzzing before we even tee it up?

First off, you’ve got Scottie Scheffler. Is this slump for real? Or is it just that early-season funk that happens to everyone? He’s had serious success at Augusta, so if he stumbles there, yeah, it’s time to hit the panic button. You can’t just brush off a string of “off” performances when you’re that good, especially at a place you own.

Then there’s Justin Rose. Mid-40s now, still grinding, and ranked 7th in the world. He’s been runner-up at Augusta before, lost in playoffs. It’s insane he hasn’t got that jacket yet. He bounced back from a bit of a dip with a solid T13 at The Players. Is this finally his week? He’s got the game, he’s got the pedigree. You gotta think he’s got a shot.

And Brooks Koepka. His major record since that 2023 PGA Championship win? Not exactly stellar. But he’s been talking about fixing a putting issue that’s bugged him for years. He was playing some good golf until that missed cut in Houston. Is this the major where Brooks reminds everyone he’s a major force again? He’s got the firepower, no doubt.

Who's Trending and Who's Fading?

As the first major of the year rolls around, some guys are looking sharp, others… not so much. Who’s got momentum, and who’s looking shaky?

I’m buying stock in Ludvig Aberg. Kid’s been on a tear. Three top 10s in his last three starts. And yeah, his Masters record is small, but what he’s shown is damn impressive. He’s definitely going to be a factor this week. Kid’s got game.

Tommy Fleetwood is another one. His game just seems to fit Augusta to a tee. He’s been in the top 10 in three of his five starts this year. Even if he didn’t get the win this past weekend, he was in contention. I’ve got a feeling about Fleetwood this week.

And Xander Schauffele. After winning two majors in 2024, that rib injury really threw him off. Last year, he just couldn’t seem to get his swing right. But he’s been playing well lately, especially with his irons. I think Rose might win, but don’t sleep on Xander being in the mix come Sunday. He’s got the talent to win any major.

Bryson and LIV Golf: Ready to Rumble?

Bryson DeChambeau has been lighting it up on LIV, winning both his starts before Augusta. He’s also finished top six there the last two years. So, are we more bullish on Bryson than ever? Is he the top LIV pick?

With Rory and Scottie not exactly setting the world on fire early in their seasons, this Masters feels wide open. Why not Bryson? You can’t ignore how he’s trending. The big question for him will be iron distance control. That’s always been his Achilles’ heel. If he can dial that in, he’s dangerous.

But honestly, a LIV win? It doesn’t carry the same weight for me. It was one thing when Brooks lost to Rahm, but Bryson winning at Augusta? I just don’t see it happening. He’ll probably contend, sure, but winning? Nah.

I agree. It’s hard to see it all clicking for Bryson at Augusta. He seems to have figured some stuff out since those missed cuts in ’22 and ’23. He contended last year even when his iron distances were all over the place. He’s been talking about fine-tuning his wedges. But I think Jon Rahm, not Bryson, is the LIV player who’s really in the hunt this week. Rahm’s got the experience and the game for Augusta.

Scottie & Rory vs. The Field: Who You Got?

So, the big question: are you putting your money on Scottie and Rory, or the rest of the damn field? And why?

I’m going with the field. Simple as that. Neither of the top dogs has shown enough consistency this year for me to bet against everyone else. Does that mean they won’t win? Not necessarily. But the odds are definitely in favor of the field right now.

The field for me too. It’s not that I don’t think Scottie and Rory can contend. But I’m not convinced Scheffler is comfortable with his driver, and that’s a pretty damn important club at Augusta. Rory, I expect a little more from him right now, but neither of them are playing at the world-beating form we’ve seen in the last couple of years. It’s a tough call, but the field feels safer.

I’ll take the field as well. Between Scottie’s iron play, which has been un-Scottie-like, and Rory’s back issue, it’s more likely than not that someone outside the top two is taking home the green jacket. I’m curious to see how Rory plays now that he’s finally conquered that mental hurdle at Augusta. He’ll contend, but repeating is a monumental task. And honestly, I’m not sure what to make of Scottie’s game right now. Is his iron play ready for Augusta?

Who Needs a Masters Win the Most?

Last year, we all agreed Rory needed a Masters win more than anyone. He got it. So, who’s next on that list? Who’s got the most pressure to finally get that green jacket?

Justin Rose. No question. He’s had his hands on that jacket twice, almost had it. Father time is creeping up, and his chances are dwindling. A green jacket for Rose would be more meaningful than for almost anyone else in that field. Plus, that swing of his deserves more than one major.

Tommy Fleetwood. He was playing like the best player in the world at the end of last season and is still in great form in 2026. It’s time for him to get that major. He’s got the talent, he’s got the game. Just needs to put it all together on the big stage.

I’m with Zephyr on this one. It’s Rose. He’s been in the lead or tied for the lead at Augusta nine times after the first, second, and third rounds. That’s third all-time, behind Palmer and Nicklaus. He’s 18 under par in his last 10 Masters appearances, which ranks seventh. Five of the six players ahead of him have won jackets in that span. It’s time for Justin Rose.

Final Thoughts Before the First Tee Shot

Alright, let’s wrap this up with some parting thoughts for the Masters.

I think we’re going to see a hole-in-one on No. 16 on Sunday. That funnel pin they sometimes set up? It’s begging for it.

And I have a feeling this is the year our guy Alan Bastable wins the media lottery. Ever since Brooks Koepka asked him if he’d played the course in a press conference, I’ve been dying to see that happen for him.

I second that motion. Bastable winning the media lottery would be legendary.

Ten years after his collapse on No. 12, I think Jordan Spieth is going to hold the 54-hole lead this year. Get ready for another memorable Sunday at Augusta National. That would be a story for the ages.
