Look, we’ll all figure this new-look PGA Tour thing out. We always do. But let’s be real for a second. The whole damn point of the Tour used to be giving its players more chances to play. That was the commissioner’s job. Back then. Now? We’ve got a CEO, Brian Rolapp. And this guy, he’s not exactly a golf lifer. He’s an ‘eyeball guy’. His job is to make money for the investors. John Henry and his crew. And the shareholders. Which, yeah, includes some players. So, the goalposts have moved. It’s all about the customers now. Us. The fans. And they’ve got this ancient math formula they’re apparently using: 👀 👀 👀 = $$$ . You gotta accept it. This is a new era. And it’s not being run by the old golf guard. Think Bob Goalby, Deane Beman. Nah. This is a money game now. Tiger Woods is in the mix, sure, but he’s also a ‘show-me-the-money’ guy. His agent, Mark Steinberg, he’s smart. He kept Tiger and his buddies away from that LIV money. Loyalty. It pays, apparently. So, with all that bullshit out of the way, let’s talk about what actually makes sense. And what’s just… baffling.
First off, a PGA Tour schedule with around two dozen events. Including the majors. And the Ryder Cup, Presidents Cup… how that all fits is a mystery for the ages. But here’s the kicker: they’re talking about paying players more than just some pathetic ‘stipend’. About damn time. It’s gross, yeah, but get over it. This is pro sports. We’re not talking about a friendly Sunday game here.
Then there’s the field size. 120 players for those 20-odd events. With a cut. Honestly? That’s a solid number. These guys take forever to play 18 holes these days. We’re talking five hours for a threesome. It should be under four. So, 120 players? It’s manageable. Plus, you can actually learn who these guys are. You can follow 120 players. Not some bloated field of 150 where you don’t know half the names by Friday afternoon.
Relegation. As a concept, it’s good. Brilliant, even. But the word itself? It’s not gonna fly in golf culture. It’s a football thing. But baseball has its ‘call-ups’ and ‘demotions’. Golf has ‘The Card’. That’s pure gold. You have a PGA Tour card, or you don’t. You’re fighting for it. Fighting to keep it. Fighting to get it back. Imagine American Express sponsoring that whole narrative. It’d be massive. Or maybe they’ll just screw it up, who knows.
The old terms, ‘Tier I’ and ‘Tier II’, they’re dead. Buried. The new names? ‘Championship Series’ and ‘Challenger Series’. Catchy as a root canal. Just call the main one ‘The Tour’. You need a Tour Card to play. Simple. And the series for the guys trying to get on? Call it the ‘Driving Tour’. Or the ‘Driving Tour’. Not everything needs a capital letter. Look at the iPhone. Or the iPad. It works.
The Korn Ferry Tour? It gets a nod. A vague one. The ‘Challenger Series’ sounds a lot like the Korn Ferry Tour. We’ve seen this movie before. Web.com Tour, Nationwide Tour, Buy.com Tour, Nike Tour, Hogan Tour. We’re exhausted. This ‘Driving Tour’ needs to be a proper road show. Powered by Avis, maybe! Guys driving, playing their hearts out. That’s how tours become tours. People love a story. A road show. This ‘Driving Tour’ could be where the real grit is. As compelling as ‘The Tour’, maybe even more so.
The Tour finale is going to be match play. This could be huge. The FedEx Playoffs have been a mess from day one. Always felt like a glorified money grab for the guys already at the top. But if you’re going to do match play at the end of the year, why not at the beginning too? You heard about the push to bring back Walter Hagen? This is that energy.
Imagine this: The first major of the year, late winter. The PGA Championship. But it’s combined with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Three rounds at Pebble. Winner gets a massive check, a Bing Crosby medal, and bragging rights for eternity. Then, the top 16 players? They head to Cypress Point for a weekend of pure match play. Single elimination. Saturday, Sunday. Four wins in a row? You’re the PGA Champion. It’s understandable. It’s exciting. You can actually follow it. Unlike some of the convoluted FedEx stuff.
But it’s not all sunshine and birdies. Rolapp’s plan? It’s got some serious holes. Three, to be exact. Blatant ones.
So, what does the PGA Tour look like in 2028? Honestly, nobody really knows. My colleague Sean Zak? He’s the guy. He’s one of the few who can actually translate what Tiger, Steinberg, Henry, and Rolapp are cooking up. Eventually, it’ll all make sense. Because sport, at its core, is a refuge. A place where things just… make sense. And what makes sense will stick. You can go from the Driving Tour to The Tour. You can get a card. All you gotta do is play damn good golf. No fancy explanations needed. Just play well. That’s the bottom line.
